Denis Fitzgerald has taught in a range of public schools across NSW as a classroom teacher and in a variety of promotions positions. He is a member of the Board of NESA and chairs its Curriculum Committee.

More recently, Denis was Director of Equity and Aboriginal Education in the NSW DEC, a position he left in order to return to schools. Denis has written a book on education history and ideas, Teachers and Their Times, published by the University of NSW Press. He has most recently taught at a number of PSP schools in Sydney’s west. He is currently working as a casual teacher as well as engaging in research and various education projects. He was a member of the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards [BOSTES] and chaired the Board’s Senior History Consultative Committee. He was also the foundation Director of the union’s Centre for Professional Learning and the editor of the Journal of Professional Learning.
