This course investigates the key components for effective teaching of mathematics in the primary classroom.
The Essentials of Teaching Mathematics K-6 is designed for teachers who wish to unpack key components in the effective teaching of mathematics. Participants will examine practical strategies to improve student engagement, ways to develop mathematics concepts across key learning areas and the role of numeracy within the study of mathematics.
Questioning techniques, the value of student reflection, problem solving and how to teach mathematical vocabulary, will be addressed within the framework of designing effective lessons.
By the end of the course, teachers will have improved their professional knowledge by examining the current research on mathematics and how that applies to their teaching program. Collegial discussion will be based on student learning.

Completing The Essentials of Teaching Mathematics K-6 before 31 July 2021 under NESA’s interim arrangements will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of delivery and assessment of NSW curriculum addressing standard descriptors 1.5.2, 2.1.2, 2.2.2, 2.5.2, 5.1.2, 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
