This two-day course is designed for school leaders and aspiring school leaders. It will cover school decision-making, mentoring, supervision, ethical leadership, and the many challenges which are common to the role of a school leader at any level. The program will be presented by Maurie Mulheron and Lila Mularczyk, who had an extensive and diverse career with the NSW Department of Education, in particular as leaders in school and with professional associations.
The course will deal with a range of issues faced by teachers in leadership roles and how to deal effectively with the challenges that arise.
The course also deals with the personal and professional ethics crucial to leadership within NSW public schools.
How to be an Effective Leader in School: Mentoring and Supervision for School Leaders
Mentoring relationships are part of the makeup of most schools, whether they be in the formal sense or through professional relationships between colleagues.
This course will discuss the following aspects of mentoring in schools:

Is Mentoring for Me?
In preparing for a role as a mentor there are many questions which will be raised, professionally and personally.
Performance and Development Framework
While the primary relationship around which the Performance and Development Framework is centred on the participant and their supervisor, there is a role for the mentor in supporting the process, particularly as the participant works towards the achievement of their professional goals.
Critical Elements of Successful Mentoring
The attributes and behaviours of mentors contribute significantly to the success of the relationship, as do the workplace and learning enviornment.
Successful Matching of Mentors and Mentees
The matching of mentors and mentees is critical to success, as with any successful working relationship.
Building Relationship and Trust
The building of relationships and trust is critical to a successful and professionally collaborate working enviornment.
How to be an Effective Leader in School: Effective Decisions for Successful School Leaders
Effective decisions for successful school leaders will provide participants with a sound knowledge of the basics of decision-making in schools, including the evidentiary basis for those decisions, a framework within which to make those decisions and exposure to a range of scenarios which have faced their colleagues.
The course also deals with the personal and professional ethics which play a major part in decision making in schools.
Participants will consider two key aspects of decision-making:
- the distinction between leadership and management
- the personal and professional ethics of decision making in Schools.
The course will workshop examples of real-life scenarios, within the context of a decision-making framework and with reference to the ethical basis for those decisions.
It will draw on the career experience of the presenters to provide an insight into how the scenarios should have been resolved.
Participants will complete the course with an understanding of the components which they need to consider when making decisions in schools. These decisions will relate to curriculum offerings, the allocation of resources, selection of staff, use of school finances and any other decisions which need to be considered in delivering educational services to a school's students and its community.
Completing How to be an Effective Leader in School can be logged as Elective PD and will contribute towards your NESA PD requirements as per NESA's transition arrangements.
