Communicating Science 7-12 is designed for all teachers of science wanting to know how subject specific literacy skills impact on the conceptual development of science.
Participants will analyse science texts including HSC Science test papers for literacy demands. Participants will link development of scientific concepts and language. They will explore different strategies, including the use of ICT, to improve student grammatical and structural responses to scientific questions.
This course focuses on the integration of two syllabus general capabilities:
- Critical and creative thinking
And provides a selection of resources to integrate ICT.
The presenter, Jim Sturgiss, has been a Head Teacher Science and test designer for the English Language and Literacy Assessment (ELLA) and Essential Secondary Science Assessment (ESSA), as well as a HSC Chemistry Senior Marker and Judge.
Completing a Communicating Science 7-12 course will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 2.5.2, 2.6.2, 3.4.2, 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
Secondary Science Teachers and teachers supporting EAL/D learners in the Science classroom
This course has a blended delivery (moodle) where participants engage with each other and the presenter in person and research and share tasks online.
Participants will need to bring a fully-charged, wifi enabled laptop or tablet. The email address provided on the application will be shared with the presenter for the purposes of access to the moodle site.
