This course focuses on the key concern of classroom management through the essential development and use of effective teaching strategies. Highly experienced teachers present the course in partnership with younger teachers who specialise in mentoring and teacher improvement. The course will provide participants with practical strategies and deeper understanding of the theory and practice of good management and good teaching. The course has whole group discussions and also breaks up into specific primary and secondary workshops
The role of assessment as an integral component of good teacher practice will be treated in the course section dealing with programming and reflection. Completing a Leading Aboriginal Education Education in Your School course will contribute 5 hours of QTC Registered PD addressing 1.1.2, 1.2.2, 1.4.2, 1.5.2, 1.6.2, 2.1.2, 3.1.2, 4.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
Teachers in the earlier stages of their careers
The opening session will look at the understandings of effective teaching and encourage participants to contribute their views of what it constitutes. Issues of engagement and teacher and student self-concept are then explored. An experience-based presentation will follow and consider how classroom management fits into the analysis and draw in the elements of planning, relationships and culture. Sector groups will then be formed to examine more closely the operational consequences of these issues and how the theoretical understanding lead to improved classroom management capacities. Participant questioning and intervention will be emphasised throughout. The final plenary session seeks to develop a theory of practice and effectiveness refining the initial principles
